When people experience a migraine attack, they have elevated levels of a protein called calcitonin gene‑related peptide (CGRP) in the brain. These proteins attach to and activate receptors in the brain, which is believed to be a cause of migraine attacks. Receptors help cells communicate and bring about responses, such as pain.
Nurtec ODT works by blocking CGRP receptors from being activated. This can help to treat and prevent migraine attacks. Nurtec ODT can also help stop the pain signals, swelling of blood vessels, and inflammation that occurs in the brain.
Nurtec ODT can start working fast. In the study for acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults, some people taking Nurtec ODT were free from their migraine pain and most bothersome symptom in as soon as 2 hours. And some people were able to get back to normal activities in as soon as 60 minutes.
The study included 1351 people who took either Nurtec ODT or placebo to treat their migraine attacks. More people taking Nurtec ODT experienced freedom from pain, freedom from most bothersome symptom, normal functioning, and pain relief at 2 hours compared to placebo. More people taking Nurtec ODT were also able to maintain these benefits through 48 hours vs placebo. Additionally, more people taking Nurtec ODT experienced pain relief and freedom from functional disability as early as 60 minutes vs placebo.
In another study, people taking Nurtec ODT every other day for prevention experienced a greater reduction in monthly migraine days (MMDs) during weeks 9-12 than those taking placebo. The study included 695 people who took either Nurtec ODT or placebo to prevent their migraine attacks. People taking Nurtec ODT experienced 4.3 fewer MMDs during weeks 9-12 vs 3.5 fewer MMDs experienced by people taking placebo.
